While we were hiking at the campground, Jen spotted a woodpecker acting quite strangely. It was hopping all over a tree and pecking furiously. After awhile, we figured out why. A copperhead snake was up in the tree with it. They went at it for awhile. The snake would strike at the woodpecker and then go into a hole. The woodpecker would follow it around and attack the snake every chance it got. If you look to the right of the woodpecker, you will see the snake. Jen got an amazing shot of it. The snake is actually trying to strike at this time. Finally the woodpecker won the battle...it pecked at the snake and the snake fell about 25-30 feet out of the tree to the brush below. It was awesome to see...but then we realized that we should maybe move since it fell about 15 feet away from us! We started walking on the trail...about 20 feet later, we saw a snake slither off the path and into the brush.
